Introduction

Your CV has got you the interview but what are you going to do now?

This isn’t your first interview; you’ve been there before, perhaps many times. You will often have lots of conflicting thoughts. "Do I really want the job?" is sometimes the first thought. If you answer your own thoughts with a "Yes, I do," then other seemingly trivial questions arise.

What reason do I tell my boss for wanting the time off? Should I say I’ve got an interview for another job? If I do, will the boss be delighted and hope I get it? (glad to get rid of me) or will the boss burst into tears and beg me to stay? (wishful thinking!)

Back in real life it probably isn’t a good idea to say that you want time off to attend an interview. However open your organisation is, letting it become common knowledge that you “aren’t happy” working for it is a bold step to take. It’s much better to think of a family or domestic reason for your absence.

But be sensible and do not invent a reason that is obviously false. If you feel that you must remain scrupulously open with your employer, remember that there are things your employer may prefer not to know and your telling them could damage the relationship.

In any event, if you do tell the full story you must be prepared to answer the “why?” question. Avoid making it a personality issue and, if you can, avoid making it an organisational issue. You may yet need a reference!

Remember that at this stage the chance of landing the job you are being interviewed for will, at the very best, be no more than one in five. Fall back on the “It isn’t you, it’s me” answer and explain your positive points. Emphasise your ambition, your drive, your eagerness for more responsibility etc. Give substantial reasons that will look good if your boss puts them onto your personal file.
